The Elafiti Islands: Dubrovnik's Best-Kept Secret

Just a short boat ride from Dubrovnik's Gruž Harbor lies the Elafiti archipelago — a group of 13 islands, three of which are inhabited. These car-free islands offer a glimpse of authentic Mediterranean life that stands in beautiful contrast to Dubrovnik's tourist-heavy Old Town.

The Three Main Islands

Koločep (Kalamota) The closest and smallest inhabited island, Koločep is a peaceful paradise of pine forests, olive groves, and hidden sandy coves. There are no cars, no crowds — just the sound of cicadas and the sea.

Don't miss: The Blue Cave of Koločep — the famous Modra špilja where sunlight creates an ethereal blue glow — the medieval churches, and the beautiful walking path that connects the island's two villages.

Lopud The most popular Elafiti island, and for good reason. Lopud offers the perfect blend of natural beauty, history, and amenities. The car-free village is charming, with Renaissance-era buildings, subtropical gardens, and waterfront restaurants.

Don't miss: Šunj Beach — one of the only sandy beaches in the Dubrovnik area. The walk from Lopud village to Šunj takes about 20 minutes through a beautiful forested path.

Šipan The largest Elafiti island is also the quietest and most authentic. Šipan has been producing olive oil and wine since Roman times, and the island's two villages — Šipanska Luka and Suđurađ — are full of centuries-old stone houses and church ruins.

Don't miss: The Rector's Palace in Šipanska Luka, the olive groves, and the excellent konoba (traditional tavern) restaurants serving locally caught fish.

How to Visit the Elafiti Islands

Speedboat Tour (Recommended) The best way to see all three islands in a single day. A speedboat tour from Dubrovnik takes you to multiple islands with swimming stops in between.

Public Ferry The Jadrolinija ferry connects Dubrovnik to Koločep, Lopud, and Šipan. It's affordable but slower, and you'll typically only have time to visit one or two islands per day.

Private Boat Hire a private speedboat to explore at your own pace, with the freedom to visit hidden coves and smaller islets.

Best Time to Visit

The Elafiti Islands are beautiful year-round, but the best time for a boat tour is May through October when swimming is comfortable and restaurants are open. July and August bring the warmest water but also the most visitors to Šunj Beach.

For a quieter experience, visit in June or September when the weather is perfect but the crowds are thinner.

Food & Restaurants

Each inhabited island has excellent restaurants serving fresh, locally caught seafood. On Lopud, try the waterfront restaurants in the village harbor. On Šipan, seek out a traditional konoba for grilled fish and homemade wine.

Expect to pay €15–25 for a fish lunch with wine — significantly less than Dubrovnik's Old Town restaurants.
